Reflection by interviewer:
Re-defining the business model in an ever-changing business environment is one of the keys of long-term sustainability. However, implementation of a new business model is easier said than done. In Digital Frontier, the company is trying to re-define the traditional 2D cell animation industry with 3D technologies that can be used in the production of animated television series and feature films. However, it is a long arduous process of building organizational capabilities in human capital and technological innovations. Despite various difficulties, the company is optimistic about its strategic direction, and the future market potential of Southeast Asia, India, and China. To capitalize on these emerging markets, the company is actively building capabilities in its Malaysian and Taiwan studios to serve as gateways to develop local talents that are passionate about creating content for the local audience. To increase competitiveness in a globalized marketplace, perhaps it is time for Japanese companies to re-define its traditional business model, and reposition themselves as global producers rather than global suppliers. – By Steven Neo Say Bin

Guest Speaker

As Executive Managing Director, I lead the CG Production Department at Digital Frontier where we produce full CG feature films based on major intellectual properties such as the Resident Evil series, take part on 3D animation and VFX of major live-action and animated motion pictures such as Wolf Children, and do motion capture and in-game cut scenes for bestselling video games such as the Tekken series.

Our services cover full service CG production, from planning to delivery for motion pictures, games, TV, home media, live exhibitions, and online platforms. We also have very high expertise in motion capture – we own and have full access to one of Asia’s largest motion capture studios, OPAKIS, located in Tokyo.
