In many Asian countries, the percentage of working women, especially in senior management positions, has been low compared to Europe or North America. It is particularly so in Japan, where, for example, less than 2% of board members at top companies are women. Why is it so low, why does it matter, and what can business leaders do to initiate the change? Are we serious enough?

In this Professional Seminar, Mr. Georges Desvaux, the managing partner of McKinsey’s Japan office, co-author of the consulting firm’s “Women Matter” report series, speaks on the issue of gender diversity in business, with emphasis on diversity in leadership positions. He shares facts and insights brought from McKinsey & Company’s extensive research projects (many of which he led), and discuss what can be done to open up more female talent to realize the future growth of corporations.

Mr. Desvaux's presentation will be followed by a dialogue between two male top executives: Mr. Desvaux from McKinsey & Company and Mr. Tomoya Nakamura, Dean at GLOBIS University.

Guest Speaker

Mr. Georges Desvaux is the managing partner of McKinsey’s Japan office, having served previously in Beijing and Paris. Mr. Desvaux is also a leader of McKinsey's Marketing Practice and the Consumer & Shopper Insights Center (csi.mckinsey.com).

He advises top management in insurance, banking, and consumer-oriented companies on global growth strategy, marketing capabilities, and organizational design. He has supported IPOs and M&A in high-tech, telecom, and financial institutions.

He has authored numerous research articles on consumer and
macroeconomic trends and is leading McKinsey’s research on the role of women in corporations.

Dialogue Partner

At GLOBIS, Mr. Nakamura teaches subjects in the leadership area and has conducted various global training programs to GLOBIS' corporate clients. Prior to GLOBIS, Mr. Nakamura joined Marubeni Corporation and while seconded to Advantage Partners, worked on the reorganizations of invested companies. As General Manager of Fuji Machinery Mfg. & Electronics Corporation, he contributed in the rapid reorganization of the company. As Senior Managing Director at Sun-Life Corporation, he introduced a progressive ESOP for more than 250 employees, including part-time workers. Mr. Nakamura also writes a column, "Ki and Management" periodically at GLOBIS.JP. Mr. Nakamura earned his MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA from Hitotsubashi University.
