Buzz about the utility of an MBA in Japan has never been louder. Treading water in a listless Japanese economy, applicants have been flocking to business schools in record numbers. Most apply for the usual motivations: broader career opportunities, more money, a ticket to the inner circle.

However, entrepreneurs are abandoning corporate ranks in ever-increasing numbers to launch ventures, and are asking themselves: "Is MBA right for me?" Drawing inspiration from icons like Jobs and Zuckerburg, entrepreneurs are sharply divided on whether an MBA helps or hinders one's quest to create the company of one's dreams. Opponents say that MBAs are an unbearable opportunity cost that kills entrepreneurial spirit and burns valuable time. Proponents of MBAs insist that it is absurd to strive to be a statistical outlier, like a Zuckerburg; an MBA is critical for the entrepreneur to channel entrepreneurial spirit into practical action with solid business skills.

Profile:
Dr. Mark Lee Ford came to Japan in 1994 as principal scientist of several aerospace endeavors between the U.S. and Japan governments. Thereafter, he has been working extensively in corporate venturing, strategy, and restructuring for multinationals and Japanese clients.

Concurrently, Ford is involved with medical ventures and teaches at two universities in Tokyo. His scientific interests include fluid mechanics and oncology.

Mr. Katagi has founded numerous successful ventures, including Kenja Corporation, where he currently serves as CEO. Kenja provides innovative solutions via a platform for collaboration and content access that leverages the cloud.

Prior to Kenja, Mr. Katagi held senior leadership roles, including Senior Managing Director of Fidelity Investments and Chief Marketing Officer of Vodafone Japan, Global Director of Commercial Strategy of Vodafone Group, and Executive Vice President of Japan Telecom. Mr. Katagi's specialties include corporate strategy, marketing, turnaround management, and restructuring with special emphasis in the telecom sector.

Moreover, Mr. Katagi is a well-sought after guest lecture and speaker in Tokyo on a wide variety of topics, including entrepreneurship, strategy, and marketing, and he teaches at several universities. He earned his MBA at Harvard Business School and obtained his bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley.

Mr. Hatanaka is founder of several ventures, including Hybrid Partners and IP Soft Japan. Prior to establishing his ventures, he held senior leadership roles as CEO of Milky Cartoon Ltd, a well-known contents creation and production company, and Managing Director at PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Mr. Hatanaka's specialties include M&A, turnaround management, and corporate strategy in fields such as financial services, manufacturing, and energy. A renaissance man, he is deeply involved in a wide variety of activities from diverse fields, such as teaching French and acting in theater.

He earned his MBA at Harvard Business School and obtained his graduate degree at Waseda.

Born and raised in Israel, Mr. Edi Liss decided as a young man to explore and travel around the world. After having lived in Africa, he moved to Asia fifteen years ago and started a jewelry business in fashion-oriented Japan. By introducing high quality and unique jewelry from Israel to Japanese department stores, Mr. Liss made a name for himself and his company in Tokyo.

His Company "Gishur" originates from the Hebrew word for "bridging", a symbolic word that connects both his home country Israel and Japan. Eager to learn more about management and Japan. Mr. Liss joined GLOBIS University as one of its first foreign students and obtained his MBA degree after years of hard work and perseverance.

Traci Consoli is the creator of The Pink Cow concept and coordinates guests and events. With a BA degree in Art Studio and Religious Studies from The University of California Santa Barbara, she brings an artist's vision to The Pink Cow concept and food concept creation.

Traci has been in Japan for over 20 years, she continues to keep abreast of food & style trends in both Japan and her native California. With an understanding of both places and a great love of food, drink and people, she has brought The Pink Cow's unique flavor to Tokyo.

Now with over twelve years of restaurant industry experience she is enthusiastically working to expand the Pink Cow concept to the mainstream market. The Pink Cow is moving to a more central location this summer and has plans to create future concept based outlets.

Neil Rosenblatt has nearly fifteen years experience living and working in Japan. He is currently the president of Eclipse Learning Corporation, a company that provides marketing and managerial consulting services to large and small companies, including new ventures.

Neil has founded several companies in both Japan and the United States. He also has experience as a consultant at the management consulting company L.E.K (focus on market entry strategies) and in strategy at the investment bank Deutsche Bank. Neil lectures frequently on entrepreneurship and marketing at the University of Tokyo.

He holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management of Management at Northwestern University and an MPA from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
